Fire and smoke rise from the tail section of a Jeju Air Boeing 737-800 series aircraft after the plane crashed and burst into flames at Muan International Airport in South Jeolla Province, some 288 kilometers southwest of Seoul on December 29, 2024. Yonhap via Agence France-Presse/File(UPDATED) Promotional activities and award shows in South Korea's entertainment industry have been suspended following a plane crash in the country that claimed 179 lives.

A Jeju Air plane from Thailand, carrying 181 people, crashed Sunday morning upon arrival at an airport in Muan, South Jeolla province, leaving only two survivors.

In light of the tragedy, local broadcasters and K-pop artists have halted their activities to honor the victims and their families, as the country observes a week-long mourning period.

MBC canceled the live broadcast of its drama awards, originally scheduled for late Monday. Similarly, KBS canceled the live broadcast of its drama awards, and SBS its entertainment awards, both planned for New Year's Eve on Tuesday, according to reports by Korean entertainment news website Soompi.

MBC and KBS will instead record their award shows and air them at a later date, while SBS has yet to decide whether to reschedule its event as a recorded broadcast or present it in an alternative format.

MBC also said Gayo Daejejeon, its year-end music festival with a lineup of over 30 K-pop acts, will no longer air live on late Tuesday, Soompi reported. Although the event will continue, it will now be recorded and broadcast at a later date.

Meanwhile, K-pop groups have postponed the release of promotional materials for upcoming music releases, including SEVENTEEN's sub-unit BSS, which had planned to unveil photos for their single album, "Teleparty," late Sunday.

Hitmaking girl group IVE announced the postponement of the promotional schedule for their upcoming third extended play, "IVE EMPATHY."

Stray Kids also delayed the release of their "SONG by" content on Sunday.

Le Sserafim postponed putting out member Huh Yunjin's song "Jellyfish" on Monday, adding that the track's new release date will be announced at a later time.

BTS will also skip publishing this week's episode of its YouTube web series "Run Jin," among other content.

Several artist accounts have informed fans that they will not upload social media content until the end of the mourning period on January 4, including those of THE BOYZ, PLAVE, VIVIZ, SHINee's Taemin, B.I, Bang Yedam and the members of EXO-CBX.

The official X accounts of BTS and SEVENTEEN also said they would not upload birthday content for members V and Joshua, respectively, instead sharing messages of condolence for the victims of the plane crash. Both idols are celebrating their birthdays this Monday.

Officials have cited a bird strike as the likely cause of the plane crash, considered the worst ever aviation disaster on South Korean soil.
