MANILA –  Around 3,000 ARMYs or fans of the South Korean megagroup BTS joined a walk at the Ayala Triangle in Makati on Sunday morning.

This, after BTS member Min Yoongi, aka Suga, faced alleged cyberbullying and online harassment the past weeks.

Nearly 30 BTS ARMY fan bases in Metro Manila of 50 fan bases across the country joined the activity dubbed as “The Purple Walk of Love: You Never Walk Alone”, according to Nikko Dizon, one of the organizers.

“This is the very opportune time para i-raise namin ito as fans, on being on social media all the time because this is how we connect to each other… We take it to another level,” said Dizon.

The event also aims to fight disinformation and raise awareness on the importance of media literacy to prevent cyberbullying that heavily affects one's mental health.

“Naisip namin si Suga sobrang popular, sobrang successful all over the world. Kilala siya. Paano pa ‘yong mga ordinaryong tao na nagiging subject ng cyber bullying?,” Dizon furthered.

Suga recently admitted to driving drunk and apologized to fans on social media.

The singer, who is currently performing mandatory military duties as a social service agent, was found by police lying on the ground next to his e-scooter late at night on August 6, with a blood alcohol level well over the legal limit.

BTS fans have been divided over the controversy, with some rallying behind the singer as others call for him to leave the band.

Purple was used as the unifying theme for Sunday’s event as it symbolizes the bond of BTS and ARMYs which “remain unbreakable for the past 11 years since the South Korean’s band’s debut in 2013”, organizers said.

“With this Purple Walk, not only we are promoting anti-bullying but we are also pushing further support sa Pilipinas rin. Let’s be actually open to having conversations about how to stop bullying across the country,” said Cams Anareta, one of the participants and volunteers who traveled from Antipolo City.

The seven members of the world's most popular boy band have been on a self-described "hiatus" since 2022 due to their military service, which South Korea requires of all men under 30 due to tensions with the nuclear-armed North.
