“[When I read the script,] I thought nothing much was required of me because I didn’t have that many lines, being a bodyguard. But still, there was a very strong presence that this character exudes so it did require some effort to put together that presence,” Rain, also known by his real name Jung Ji-hoon, said via an interpreter in a recent online press conference.

“I don’t have that many lines so it was more difficult for me because I had to express emotions without saying it out loud. It had to be done with my eyes,” he said.

The action drama series, released on July 3 on Disney+, follows Oh Wan-soo (portrayed by Kim Ha-neul), a world-class golfer who shifts her focus to philanthropy after marrying into the powerful Hwain Group conglomerate.

Following a terror attack, Wan-soo meets Seo Do-yoon (played by Rain), who becomes her bodyguard while covertly investigating the death of his friend.

Because he had to do a lot of acting with his eyes, Rain recalled, “My eyes aren’t the largest of eyes, so I would skip dinner because I couldn't afford to have my face swell. I needed to be as expressive as possible with my eyes, so that’s how passionate I was.”

Director Park Hong-kyun praised Rain’s acting, saying the actor is “extremely detailed and nuanced in his emotional performance.”

“I think a lot of the spotlight is shed on [Rain] being a great action actor, but one thing I really think all of you are going to agree with me, and this is something I was very taken with, is that he is very emotionally expressive,” he said.

“Red Swan” marks Rain’s return to the small screen after two years, following “Ghost Doctor.” His past TV projects include the wildly popular “Full House,” a romantic comedy in which he starred alongside Song Hye-kyo.

The new series also boasts intense action scenes, which heavily feature Rain, who starred in the Hollywood martial arts film “Ninja Assassin.”

The 42-year-old actor bared that he even did most of the stunts by himself. “I feel very sorry about using stunt [doubles] because I feel like I have to do everything myself. I feel more comfortable pulling off the action sequences myself,” he said.

“I wanted to do something that looked really impactful,” he said.
