Swiss-Filipino actress G. Tongi plays multiple characters in the stage play "Mix-Mix: The Filipino Adventures of a German Jewish Boy."

Tongi shared that she does not act a lot, but when she does, "I want to make sure that it's relevant to the time and it has something to say about the present."

The play is written by Boni Alvarez and directed by Jon Lawrence Rivera.

It is based on the real-life story of Ralph “Rudy” Preiss, whose family escaped the Holocaust by taking refuge in the Philippines.

Under then-president Manuel L. Quezon’s open-door policy, more than a thousand Jewish refugees were saved from Nazi persecution.

"I knew that this story, something nobody knows about, really brings understanding to our humanity as people," Tongi said. "We are here in America as Filipinos. Instead of assimilating and forgetting our culture, we are intersecting our cultures, and that's so beautiful."

Actor Casey J. Adler plays Rudy.

The title “Mix-Mix” refers to the literal translation of the Filipino dessert "halo-halo."

It is also a metaphor for different cultures and beliefs coming together.

The play mirrored the real-life events of how they helped and healed each other while surviving the ravages of war.

Several Filipino American actors are in the cast, including Angelita Esperanza, who makes her stage debut.

She says “Mix-Mix” is a story of acceptance, community, and resilience.

"To have that history be unearthed and be shared with everybody, I think it's so important," Esperanza said.

The actress added: "With everything that's going on in the world, it feels, unfortunately, so appropriate to share this kind of story and hopefully learn from history and not repeat it."

Alexis Camins, meanwhile, welcomed the opportunity to learn and share this part of Filipino history that he said needs to be told.

"These are stories that are important to us," he said. We hear the same stories over and over again, but we need to hear all these other diverse stories. It increases our knowledge of ourselves. And it makes our culture richer."

“Mix-Mix: The Filipino Adventures of a German Jewish Boy” will run at the Los Angeles Theatre Center until June 16.
