MANILA — Shortly after opening his “Eyes On You” fan meeting, Kim Soo-hyun found himself overwhelmed with emotion, tearing up at the sight of his Filipino fans whose faces beamed with smiles because of the South Korean heartthrob.

“It’s because all of you look like you’re smiling,” he explained through an interpreter after briefly turning away from the crowd at the Araneta Coliseum to wipe his tears. “Looking at the smiles, I couldn’t help but cry, I got emotional.”

On Saturday, throngs of fans filled the Big Dome in Quezon City for the sold-out event, marking Soo-hyun’s return to the country after more than a year. His last visit was in January 2023 for a fan meeting organized by a brand.

Deafening shrieks echoed throughout the venue as the lights dimmed and a video chronicling Soo-hyun’s works began to play. The excitement reached a fever pitch when the actor finally appeared on stage.

Accompanied by a live band, Soo-hyun kicked off the two-hour affair with a cover of “Love You With All My Heart,” originally recorded by singer Crush for the hit series “Queen of Tears.”

“Kamusta ka? Ako ay si Kim Soo-hyun. Magandang gabi (How are you? I'm Kim Soo-hyun. Good evening),” he said, charming Filipino fans by speaking in the local language.

“I’m very happy that I was able to come back,” said Soo-hyun, who frequently scanned the crowd and waved at fans throughout the show. “I was here in the Philippines in 2022, 2023 and now 2024, so I’m very happy to see you again.”

The fan meet provided supporters with new insights from Soo-hyun, who is also known for starring in the dramas “My Love from the Star” and “It’s Okay to Not Be Okay.” During one segment, for instance, he answered questions related to photos from his Instagram, which he typically posts without captions.

In another segment, he delved into certain scenes from “Queen of Tears,” sharing how he felt while filming those scenes and his preparation for those moments.

Soo-hyun also enthusiastically picked up the Filipino slangs “omsim” (from “mismo,” meaning “exactly”), “eme lang,” and “charot” (both meaning “just kidding”), before being joined by lucky fans on stage for a relay game where the winners received necklaces as prizes.

Vocal talent

While mainly recognized as an actor, Soo-hyun has showcased his singing abilities in projects like the series “Dream High.” At the fan meeting, fans were treated to his vocal talent as he captivated them with his renditions of “Wherever You Will Go” by The Calling, “Someone You Loved” by Lewis Capaldi, and “All of Me” by John Legend.

But the performances felt more like duets as the fans sang along, which was comforting to Soo-hyun, who appeared unsatisfied with his own efforts. “Actually, the songs I sang… they aren’t the best, right? But I really gained a lot of strength from you guys,” he remarked.

Moving away from emotive song numbers, Soo-hyun also performed a Korean song that heavily involves yodeling, displaying his quirky side, much to the amusement of the audience.

Near the end of the fan meet (presented by Wilbros Live), after watching a touching video prepared by his local fan base, Soo-hyun expressed deep gratitude and admitted that he enjoyed hosting the fan meet.

“Actually, when I was planning this fan meeting, I wanted to give you guys a lot of laughs, a lot of enjoyment, but it seems like I was the one who laughed and enjoyed more,” he said.

“Moving forward, when I [go back to] acting, pursuing my career, whenever I’m feeling tired and I need some strength in life, I’ll remember these beautiful faces.”

After closing the show with “Way Home,” which he recorded for “Queen of Tears,” Soo-hyun raised the possibility of returning to the country within the year. “This year, I think I’ll be coming back to the Philippines once again. See you then,” he said.
