Andrew Scott feels a certain way towards Tom Ripley, the character that he embodies in “Ripley.”

The new Netflix limited series is the adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s bestselling novels.

Scott, who received critical acclaim for his performances in TV's “Fleabag” and the film “All Of Us Strangers,” said he looks at Ripley through a different lens as compared to how the con artist may be perceived by others.

The familiar character was also played by Matt Damon in the 1999 movie “The Talented Mr. Ripley.”

Set in the 60s, the series with its eight episodes – has more time to explore Ripley’s background and motivations, beginning with a look at his life as a grifter in new york.

"He's pretty artistic with how he cons people," said Scott of his character. "And that's what he does. He’s ignored by society and he lives in rat-filled streets In the Lower East Side, and nobody observes him, and he's allowed to get away with it."

Scott added: "I think the fascination with the audience is that we see this person who is quite small and vulnerable. Streetwise, certainly, but certainly not a murderer. And he makes loads of mistakes. And so I think that's why the character is so enduring."

In the story, Ripley was unexpectedly tasked to go to Italy to bring a rich man’s son back to the U.S.

The son, Dickie Greenleaf, is an affable man who is also seemingly adrift and longing for purpose in life. He is played by British actor Johnny Flynn.

"He's yearning to feel something about himself that I think Tom fulfills for him," said Flynn. "I think that's why that connection is strong and why Dickie loves Tom being there."

Flynn also spoke of how Greenleaf viewed Ripley as someone who can be a "soul brother."

"That was really what I held on to, somebody who is yearning to feel a certain way about himself and he's probably a little frustrated with his life," Flynn added.

“Ripley” also stars Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood.

The series is now out on Netflix.
