Winter of K-pop girl group aespa underwent surgery for pneumothorax, or collapsed lung, her agency, SM Entertainment, confirmed Friday.

According to SM Entertainment, Winter is currently recovering after the surgery.

“As [pneumothorax] is a condition prone to recurrence, [the surgery] was carried out as a preventive measure in accordance with her doctor’s opinion, and the decision was made after plenty of discussion,” the agency added, as reported by entertainment website Soompi.

According to the US’ National Institutes of Health, pneumothorax is collection of air outside the lung but within the pleural cavity. This accumulation of air can apply pressure on the lung and make it collapse.

SM Entertainment, likewise, said Winter’s recovery will be their top priority moving forward, referring to her scheduled activities.

Debuting in 2020, aespa — composed of Karina, Giselle, Winter and Ningning — is known for popularizing the metaverse concept in K-pop.

The group is scheduled to make a comeback in May. They will also embark on their world tour by the end of June.
