Taeyong of K-pop group NCT is set to enlist in the South Korean military in April, his agency announced Monday.

Citing a statement from SM Entertainment, K-pop news website Soompi reported that the 28-year-old idol would begin his mandatory service on April 15.

"NCT's Taeyong is enlisting in the Navy as an active duty soldier on April 15," SM said in the statement published in full by Soompi.

"There will be no official events held on the day he enters the recruit training center, and we ask for your understanding as his enlistment will be held privately to prevent safety incidents due to congestion on site," it added.

All able-bodied South Korean men aged under 30 must serve at least 18 months in the military as the country remains technically at war with North Korea.

Taeyong, who leads NCT, is the first member of his group to start his conscription.

The artist entered the K-pop industry in 2016 through NCT, whose 26 members are divided into various sub-units. Specifically, Taeyong performs under NCT U and the Seoul-based NCT 127.

In 2019, he debuted as a part of the supergroup SuperM, which also includes members from other SM Entertainment boy bands.

Taeyong also debuted as a soloist in June 2023 with the extended play "SHALALA."
