MANILA -- Former matinee idol Eddie Mesa, who was once dubbed the Elvis Presley of the Philippines, turned 85 with a surprise birthday celebration, where he got to bond with his family, including his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Videos and photos from the event for the Eigenmann patriarch were shared on social media by his son, actor Michael de Mesa.

"To his fans, he is the Elvis Presley of the Philippines, but to us, he’s simply our beloved Dad and Papa. Your singing may have a nation grooving, but your love for us and Jesus shapes our lives with kindness, compassion, and faith. Happy 85th birthday, Dad! May your day be filled with the love you’ve graciously given us. We love you!" de Mesa wrote on his Instagram post.

In his other Instagram post, he shared a video showing the reaction of their dad to the surprise party they prepared.

"You surprised me! Wow! You touched my heart so deeply!" Mesa said.

Mesa is known as the Elvis Presley of the Philippines, mainly from his days as the impersonator of the American icon.

In 2017, Mesa opened up about the biggest regret he had in life -- that he did not get to spend more time with his grandchildren as they grew up.
