The city of Carson in California kicked off Filipino American History Month by honoring rapper Apl.de.Ap with a ceremonial key to the city.

Carson's city council believes the multi-awarded musician and philanthropist, as well as his group the Black Eyed Peas, have been role models for the community, especially for Filipinos who comprise a fifth of its estimated 100,000 residents.

"Apl.de.ap is a voice for the Filipino community," said city council member Arleen Bocatija Ros. "And not just for the Filipino community, he brings everyone together to celebrate.

Carson Mayor Lula Davis-Holmes hailed the rapper, whose real name is Allan Pineda, as a "true example of people doing something right."

"This group (Black Eyed Peas) has touched this community," said Holmes. "They’re homegrown, they come home and they’re giving back to their community. That is very important."

Last June, Apl served as grand marshal and performed for the annual Philippine Independence Day Celebration, one of the largest and longest-running Kalayaan celebrations in the region.

For local Filipino “Carsonites,” Apl has been a constant presence in the city.

"[He] is one of the gems of our community," said Alex Cainglet of Carson's Parks and Recreation. "He provides service free of charge. He entertains and showcases our culture."

The Pampanga-born artist said this is the second time he’s received the keys to a city, with the first being in Manila. Apl.de.Ap said the key holds a special meaning for him as Carson was where Black Eyed Peas used to break dance and practice.

Apl is already making more plans to be back in Carson as he will hold a car show and adobo cook-off on Oct. 12 as part of the celebrations for Filipino American History Month.

"This is the best place to start the first day," he added. "I can’t wait to share some of the projects from the Apl.de.Ap foundation that we’ve been working on from the Philippines to here."

Various festivities and activities celebrating Filipino pride are set to be held in Carson throughout October for Fil-Am History Month.
