MANILA -- Director Kip Oebanda revealed he is already developing the script for “Bar Boys After School,” the sequel of “Bar Boys,” the 2017 hit dramedy he wrote and directed.

“It feels like I have to finish what I have started… It is a barkada film. I am writing it with close friends, 'di lang ako,” he said in an interview after the special preview for the second run of "Bar Boys the Musical," Thursday evening.

Oebanda admitted that he is considering “Bar Boys After School” as his potential farewell to the film industry — a fitting swan song as it continues the journey of the beloved story that helped further propel his career.

“I don’t know if I will retire for good. Possible,” he said. “The idea is [possibly] my last… I am only working with people I have worked with. I am only casting people I have worked with. I am only using crew I have worked with.”

The “Balota” director did not disclose if the film will still follow the original characters Torran Garcia, Erik Vicencio, Christian Carlson, and Joshua Zuniga played by Rocco Nacino, Carlo Aquino, Enzo Pineda and Kean Cipriano respectively. However, he teased the film, as the title suggests, will be set long after law school.

“The boys are older. I won't comment if the same boys. It has been seven years since 'Bar Boys.' If you look back seven years, you won’t recognize the person you were. It is about trying to stay a decent human being in a society that does not allow that to happen or is not helpful to that,” he noted.

“The one thing I enjoyed sa original is manipulating time in terms of moving forwards, tatalon. But now time has passed and we are catching up with certain characters, ano ginagawa ng time to friendship and principles and goals,” he added.

Oebanda explained the sequel will focus on themes related to “growing up” as well as the harsh realities that comes with it.

"It is about fatherhood. It is also about saying goodbye to your heroes,” he shared.

And like the first film, the director assured that the sequel will also incorporate humor while tackling the pressing issues currently faced by the country.

“It will still be funny and it will reflect of its time. It is about the society you are in. Parang it is almost designed for us to be miserable — if you are unsuccessful you are miserable and if you are successful — you are lonely,” he said.
