That much became clear to K-pop star Chanyeol during the recent Manila stop of his “City-scape” concert tour.

“For today’s show, basically, I’m gonna listen to how good of a singer all of you are,” the 31-year-old idol told the crowd through an interpreter at the start of the show at the Araneta Coliseum.

“Of course, I believe you’re all here to hear me sing, but today I’d prefer if we’re all gonna be singing together and enjoying and having so much fun,” he said.

Chanyeol didn’t even need to ask, as Filipino EXO-Ls, as EXO’s fans are fondly called, kept the energy up from start to finish, passionately singing, waving their light sticks, and cheering throughout the two-hour concert.

“You guys are such good singers. I love it,” Chanyeol later remarked at one point during the show.

Presented by PULP Live World, “City-scape” showcased Chanyeol’s artistry in full force, as he fielded his solo work that spanned various styles — from relaxed and danceable pop tunes to full-on rock band music.

Dressed in a sleeveless black shirt that showed off his toned arms, jeans, and a jacket tied around his waist, Chanyeol — who visited the Philippines thrice in 2023 — aptly opened the show with “Back Again.” He fully embraced his rockstar persona during the grungy rock track, complete with an electrifying guitar break.

During one of the talk segments, the artist, whose full name is Park Chan-yeol, further demonstrated his guitar prowess by playing snippets of rock hits, including “Sweet Child O’ Mine” by Guns N’ Roses, “Hotel California” by Eagles, and Green Day’s “Basket Case.”

Shared performances

Some of the more mellow numbers became shared performances between the artist and his fans. During “Stay With Me,” the iconic song from the hit K-drama “Goblin,” the crowd took over Punch’s chorus, while Chanyeol’s rich, deep voice carried the verses. The connection continued in “Yours,” as he pointed his mic toward the audience, encouraging them to sing Lee Hi’s parts.

Other performances featured choreography with Chanyeol joined by backup dancers on stage, including EXO-SC’s tracks “Telephone” and “Just Us 2,” as well as “Ease Up” from his recently released debut extended play “Black Out.”

Chanyeol also presented other songs off “Black Out,” including “Hasta La Vista,” during which he coughed at the start, prompting laughter among fans as he tried to suppress his own amusement and regain his composure.

He also sang “Clover,” teaching the audience the hand choreography for the song, in which he declares his fans to be his lucky four-leaf clovers, and the EP’s pop-rock title track.

The Big Dome also erupted in cheers as Chanyeol performed a medley of EXO hits, including “Lotto,” “Tempo,” “Monster,” “Obsession,” “Growl” and “Hear Me Out.”

‘Raining in Manila’ cover

In a surprising twist, Chanyeol sang “Raining in Manila” by local band Lola Amour, which he performed twice in response to the fans’ enthusiastic requests. The song replaces Yeng Constantino’s “Hawak Kamay,” which Chanyeol had typically performed during his past visits.

“It’s actually my first time listening to this song (‘Raining in Manila’) while preparing for this tour and I really liked the song,” he said.

Chanyeol even playfully asked the crowd to raise their hands if they thought he was going to sing “Hawak Kamay.” “I guess all of you thought I was gonna sing ‘Hawak Kamay’  Sorry, no more ‘Hawak Kamay,’” he said in jest.

“Next time I come back to the Philippines, I'll prepare another new song. No more ‘Hawak Kamay,’” he added.

By the end of the night, it was clear that it wasn't just the fans who enjoyed the concert. “How was it today? Good? Perfect? Did you guys make a lot of happy memories? Me too,” Chanyeol said.

“Actually, I’m going back to Korea tonight but I really don’t want to go home. Of course, if you guys call me back, I’ll fly anytime to be here,” he assured fans. “Don't feel so bad because I'm always going to be ready to be back.”
