MANILA -- The student council of the University of the East recently came to the defense of former child star and now content creator Awra Briguela, as she expressed her chosen gender identity by wearing a female school uniform on campus.

Briguela received some backlash from netizens after a social media post wherein she showed her school uniform. Briguela is a senior high school student in UE.

In a statement, UE's University Student Council said that "warriors stand against gender discrimination" and strongly condemned any form of "discrimination regardless of their identity".

"Everyone deserves a safe and inclusive environment—where no one is left behind or discriminated against, regardless of their identity," the University of the East Student Council said in their statement.

According to the Student Council of the University, the campus has its commitment to "fostering an inclusive atmosphere for the LGBTQIA+ community".

"Recently, we've become aware of the backlash surrounding Awra Briguela's post that showed her choice of uniform. In this context, it is important to note that UE is committed to fostering an inclusive atmosphere, where LGBTQIA+ members are respected, and students are permitted to wear opposite-sex attire of their choice and uniforms," the statement read.

Aside from maintaining a safe space for the LGBTQIA+ community, the council also condemned "unjust and hateful comments" targeting a student’s appearance, gender identity, or self-expression.

Ending their statement, the council also asks the public to "choose kindness and have mutual respect" for one another.

"Let us choose kindness and mutual respect, and strive to build a community where everyone feels safe being who they truly are. No one should be made to feel inferior because of their identity."

Just this May, Briguela revealed in an interview that she focuses now on making herself better.
