MANILA -- The last time singer-songwriter Ogie Alcasid visited the University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication (UP CMC) was back in 2016 for the college’s golden anniversary.

For Alcasid, performing in the alumni homecoming is his way of giving back to his alma mater, where he graduated

“It’s always nostalgic to come here,” said Alcasid, who attended the 53rd homecoming last Saturday. “There’s a part of you that’s always wants to give back.”

Alcasid entered UP in 1985, after he graduated from high school in La Salle Greenhills. At the State University, he took up Broadcast Communication. However, showbiz immediately got in the way of his studies that was why he was compelled to divide his time.

It took Alcasid eight years to finish college and in 1993, he proudly graduated and obtained his diploma.

Asked about his fondest memory of the UP CMC, Alcasid remembers his initiation for the UP Broadcasting Association, where “you are humiliated for an entire month.”

Alcasid was delighted to see his teacher, Prof. Evelyn David, who also attended the homecoming last Saturday.

“I had all good memories being under Professor David,” Alcasid said. “She was a ‘terror’ to her other students, but to me, she was very nice. I believe she gave me a high grade.”

He also beamed with pride that the new dean of UP CMC, Prof. Arminda Santiago, who took over from Dean Neni Pernia last May, was also his former teacher.

Alcasid is a member of the UP CMC Alumni Association, where he has been serving as board member for two terms or six years.

For the homecoming, Alcasid sang “Taba Koo Na Bes,” a hilarious Tagalog-Korean spoof of the good-looking and very popular Gong Yoo. He also rendered a mash-up of Justin Bieber’s “What Do You Mean” and the upbeat “Sumayaw, Sumunod,” originally by The Boyfriends, then got the crowd to its feet with one of his well-loved hits, “Dito sa Puso Ko.”

Alcasid acknowledged that he is now known as one of the Hurados in “Tawag ng Tanghalan,” that airs Mondays to Saturdays on ABS-CBN's noontime show, “It’s Showtime.”

“Without me forcing it, my branding became such,” he offered. “As you know, my branding always changes – from Ogie da Pogi to Boy Pick Up or Kuya Wes. This ‘hurado’ has always been constant to me lately. ‘Hurados’ is a strong brand. A lot of people watch ‘Tawag ng Tanghalan’ everyday.”

Recently, Alcasid started vlogging and is actually enjoying it. He launched his site – Vlang – with his wife Regine Velasquez and their seven-year-old son, Nate. He has been doing interesting vlogs and even having the videos edited.

“I see why people are so interested in it,” Alcasid said about vlogging. “It’s so different from your artista persona that people see on TV. I find myself vlogging now.”

On December 1, Alcasid will hold a repeat of his highly successful “Ogie and the Hurados” concert at the Newport Performing Arts Theater at Resorts World Manila. He will have a different set of Hurados as guests for the repeat.
