Returning to an action-packed role via “The General’s Daughter” is a delicate balancing act for Angel Locsin, who continues to undergo physical therapy three years since she first revealed having a spinal injury.

On Thursday, at the sidelines of the media launch of her co-designing venture for an eponymous bag collection, Locsin, 33, confirmed her ongoing treatments.

Pointing out that her character in the ABS-CBN teleserye is a soldier, the actress said of the production team: “They’re very careful sa mga ginagawa, naka-assist naman.”

“After naman din ng ilang procedure, medyo OK-OK naman ako. Ingat-ingat na lang din talaga. Hindi na po puwede ng gaya ng dati, na ganu’n kalikot. Ngayon, after ng mga eksena, ice pack, kasi may mga fight scenes din kami,” she added.

In 2015, Locsin explained that years of intensive training for various roles, including, at the time, her upcoming return as the superheroine Darna, had taken a toll on her physical condition. Combined with other factors, this led to her developing a bulging disc injury.

“May time na for ilang days, hindi ako nakalakad. Isang araw, gumising na lang ako na hindi ako makatayo, ni gapang, ni hatak sa sarili, hindi ko magawa . . . Isang oras na ako na sa floor,” she said at the time.

Due to the injury, Locsin and Star Cinema, the producer of the “Darna” movie, agreed to pull her out of the project, given the physical demands of the role.

With snippets of her training for “The General’s Daughter,” including where she is seen kicking and engaged in knife combat, some fans surmrised Locsin was back in full fighting form.

But on Thursday, she clarified that she still has limitations, and that she relies on physical therapy sessions to prepare her for the more physical scenes in teleserye.

My spine injury will always be with me and it took me a while to accept that. As a former athlete who used to believe in “mind over matter” to conquer pain, I realized that pain is sometimes just a reminder that we might be pushing ourselves too hard beyond our limits. But it doesn’t mean that you should stop. Don’t go there. PLEASE. Rest for a while. DON’T EVER rush yourself to recovery and NEVER let pressure hinder your body’s healing process. Take your time. Don’t ever feel guilty or sorry. And don’t try to over-compensate just to please others. Focus on what you can do. ACCEPT and learn to ADJUST. After many relapses & tears, Despite being told that I CANNOT anymore, this is me doing kicks again :) Prolly not the way that I used to, but this is fine for now. I’m doing this carefully this time. with the help of my trusted PT and instructors. still a long way to go. If you are suffering from injuries and reading this, I hope your process will not take as long as mine. If it does, that’s fine. You would know when you’re ready to bounce back. Praying for no pain and speedy recovery. If you are among the lucky ones who are not in pain, thanks for taking time to read this long post. I appreciate your effort and I hope that you could help uplift the suffering through awareness and understanding. Cheers to good health!

“Ongoing pa rin naman siya, para i-ready ko rin ‘yung katawan ko para sa next-day taping. Kung alam kong may mabigat na fight scene, gabi pa lang nagpa-pa-PT (physical therapy) na ako, para pagdating du’n, walang problema,” she explained.

Aside from “The General’s Daughter,” two film projects are lined up for Locsin — one with Star Cinema, and the other, an independent production. However, Locsin stressed, she will take them up one at a time.

“Right now, hindi ko kaya magsabay dahil very physical nga. Ayokong i-risk ulit ‘yung likod ko, pag napagod po kami,” she said.

“The General’s Daughter,” first confirmed to be in production in April, is under the direction of Manny Palo. Its release has yet to be announced.
