Julia Barretto had a ready answer when asked to pick between her celebrity aunts Gretchen and Claudine, who remain estranged after a long history of word wars and legal feuds.

Barretto, 21, spoke on the topic during a recent press conference for her upcoming primetime teleserye, “Ngayon at Kailanman,” which will debut August 20 on ABS-CBN.

The Star Magic artist was initially asked for her reaction to being called a “young Claudine Barretto,” as she follows a similar career path as a movie and TV star like her aunt in her heydays.

“It’s very flattering to receive such a compliment,” she began. “At the same time, I grew up being in the shadows of my titas, my mom, my dad. Pero someday, I only hope na I would be able to make a name for myself, and that I will be recognized for my work, and not for my last name.”

Barretto is the eldest child of Marjorie Barretto and comedian Dennis Padilla. Like her sisters Claudine and Gretchen, Marjorie was active in showbiz for a time.

In recent years, the siblings made headlines for their feud, which resulted in Gretchen being publicly disowned by her parents, who backed Claudine.

Marjorie, on the other hand, sided with Gretchen, but has since mended ties with Claudine.

“I love them both, equally,” Julia said of her aunts Gretchen and Claudine, after being asked to choose between them. “They took care of me growing up also. I cannot choose.”
