MANILA -- Canadian R&B artist Daniel Caesar looked at home on stage as he sang for a highly appreciative audience at his sold-out show at the New Frontier Theater last July 22.

August Wahh with crwn opened for Caesar, putting a spotlight on their newest collaboration, an album called "Labyrinth." With Wahh’s husky vocals and crwn’s chill beats, the crowd was sufficiently loved up in preparation for Caesar’s performance with songs like "Gaslight" and "Seasons," among others.

For his sophomore performance in Manila (the first was in the Wanderland music festival in 2018), Caesar brought his Case Study 01 tour which featured 14 songs, including two encores.

Holding hands and staring into your partner’s eyes (if you were lucky enough to have one present) was the norm at the concert, as Caesar, known for his trademark high notes and beautiful vocals, crooned about love, both present and lost, in songs like "Love Again," "Violet," and "Open Up."

Whether it was singing with just an acoustic guitar in his song, "Are You OK?," jamming with Jamaican flair in "Cyanide," or grooving in a faster number like his collaboration with Pharell Williams, "Frontal Lobe Muzik," Caesar was in control and enjoying the vibe of the crowd.

It was during his performance of tracks from his "Freudian" album that the concert became a Filipino trademark sing-along party, with the audience singing with gusto. Caesar seemed content at times to just strum his guitar and listen to the crowd, as the audience sang word per word of his songs like "Get You," "Best Part," and "Blessed."

Caesar even exclaimed, “Everybody here can sing. Y’all know the key! I love it!” during his mashup of "Complexities" and "Hold Me Down."

After singing "Entropy," confetti cannons fired, a trademark Karpos production item, signaling the end of the concert, with Caesar waving at the crowd as he casually exited the stage.

It was not the end though, as the crowd rambunctiously prodded the artist back on stage with some ‘we want more’ chanting. Caesar then waltzed in all smiles, ready to deliver an apt encore of two songs — the nostalgic "Japanese Denim," where he sung of things lasting forever; and "Superposition," a collaboration with John Mayer that reads like an artist explaining himself to his audience. The last line of that song asks, “so are you, are you understanding?” to which the Manila cheered in response to.

And yes, the answer to that is yes, we do.

We say yes to you Caesar, even to those Gloria’s Flower Shop from Tarlac merch t-shirts that you sold during the concert, as an homage to your friend’s Filipino aunt.
