MANILA (UPDATE) - Former Quezon City councilor Diorella Maria “Lala” Sotto-Antonio has been named as the new chairperson of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB).

Sotto-Antonio, the daughter of former Senate President Vicente Sotto III and veteran actress Helen Gamboa, took her oath before President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday, as seen in photos from her camp.

She succeeded Jeremiah Jaro, who led the board since October 2021.

"Thanking the President for the trust and confidence. I believe she will do well given her background," former Sen. Sotto told reporters when asked for comment.

"Besides, she has two excellent women former chairpersons to emulate, Sen. Grace Poe and Congresswoman Rachel Arenas," he added.

Sotto-Antonio graduated from De La Salle-College of St. Benilde with a degree in consular and diplomatic affairs. She also completed the Quezon City Executives and Legislators Planning Course at the University of the Philippines-Diliman.

She also served as the chief of staff of her father in 2010 to 2012 on the Commission on Appointments.

The MTRCB was created in 1985 through Presidential Decree No. 1986 and is mandated to regulate and classify motion pictures, television programs, and publicity materials among others.

It was also created to formulate schemes to help government earn revenue from the visual arts industry as well as to "promote a value-based media and entertainment culture."

MTRCB was also formed to ensure that the content produced for TV and movie will be age-appropriate and that these "have been effectively reviewed and classified."
