MANILA — A joint concert between music veterans Sharon Cuneta and Pops Fernandez was in the pipeline, until the coronavirus pandemic halted industries and forced fundamental changes to mass gatherings.

The planned collaboration was revealed Wednesday during an episode of Fernandez's "Girl Chat," streamed live on YouTube, which featured Cuneta as her guest.

The showbiz contemporaries noted that they have made numerous guest appearances in each other's shows or concerts, but have never co-headlined one.

"Sana po mag-request kayo nang mag-request para mangyari naman po 'yan!" Fernandez told her followers, joking that Cuneta might eventually forget about the plan given the uncertainties surrounding the pandemic.

"Ang tagal nang may plano iyon, dumating lang 'yung virus," Cuneta said, noting she had promised Fernandez that they would share a major concert.

"Alam mo ako [kung paano] mag-promise," Cuneta added. "In my whole lifetime, I'd say a good 95% of what I've promised people, I really, really fulfilled."

What would have been Fernandez and Cuneta's first joint concert is just one of several known planned productions that have been derailed by the pandemic.

Notably, pop star Sarah Geronimo was due to hold a major concert in the last quarter of the year, but that plan has since been scrapped, producer Viva earlier said.

Meanwhile, in the place of fully produced concerts have been virtual ones — several of which held to raise funds for live production workers who have lost their livelihood amid the pandemic.

To address their situation, industry groups and performers have organized regular concert fundraisers, such as "Faith Over Fear."

The government, too — through the Film Development Council of the Philippinjes — has begun distribution of cash assistance to qualified freelance workers in the live events industry.
