MANILA - In a twist that felt like a vicious sucker-punch, Peter, Gloria's true love, passed away in his sleep.

Many have come to expect the impending death of Gloria (Sylvia Sanchez), who has been reduced to a stammering, distant version of her cheery self by Alzheimer's, but very few can count themselves unsurprised by Peter's passing -- making it more emotional and upsetting.

His death was quiet and painless: a sharp contrast to Gloria's present living hell of remembering and forgetting. Nonie Buencamino did such a good job in portraying a man who lived a full life and couldn't have asked for more, other than maybe a few more days beside the woman he loves.

He truly made viewers feel for Peter, who remained loyal to Gloria even as she began to lose her mind to her disease.

At this point in the series, Gloria referred to Peter as "lolo," oblivious that the man who slept at a mattress on the floor of her room every night was actually the person she deeply fell for.

Laughing and smiling as Gloria talked to him about Peter, he couldn't help but drop his charade and told her one last time that he loves her. A few seconds later, he closed his eyes as Gloria looked at her with a confused gaze. He never woke up.

What came next was a series of heart-wrenching scenes: Lizelle (Andi Eigenmann) frantically trying to revive her father; their whole family grieving at a funeral; and Gloria staring into a vacant garden, muttering for Peter to take her with him.

It had fans of the show guessing whether Gloria would follow suit to conclude the series, who, some say, has been teaching them to accept the fact that life is "unpredictable" and to treasure the time they are given with their loved ones.

"The Greatest Love" will air its final episode this Friday.
