async="" src="http://www.instagram.com/embed.js" type="text/javascript"></script><p>MANILA – Moira dela Torre started writing songs when she was 12 but never in her wildest dreams did she think that millions of people would eventually sing her compositions.</p><p>Dela Torre made this admission during a roundtable interview in March before she was revealed to have been tapped by Disney to record the local version of “Reflection” for the live action film “Mulan.”</p><p>“At that time I was going through my family splitting up, I did not know how to handle it, I didn’t know I was going through -- anorexia -- because I did not know what that was called. I didn’t know I was undergoing depression, I didn’t know I was supposed to handle things, but I didn’t do it,” she said.</p><p>While writing became an escape for dela Torre, she said her songs were “never meant to be heard by a lot of people.”</p><p>Several years later, dela Torre said she now knows that her calling is “to lead people back to hope.” </p><p>“I know when I step on that stage, and one person feels encouraged, then I already know that I fulfilled my calling. That trumps every fear that anxiety that I have, just knowing that I have changed a person’s life,” she said.</p><p>Now that she is part of the local music industry, dela Torre said she is worried about “not being genuine, of being used to just doing it, of being used to just being on stage and not caring about the way other people feel, and just simply wanting to do my job.”</p><p>Fortunately, dela Torre said she hasn’t reached that point yet.</p><p>“That’s something I’m protecting. That’s something my Lola always tells me. She said, ‘No matter what stage you get on, make sure you never forget your calling.’ Kasi kapag tuloy-tuloy lahat, sunod-sunod lahat, sometimes it gets robotic,” she said.</p><p>This is also the reason why she thinks that somehow, her anxiety is “a blessing in disguise, because it keeps me in that place where someone else’s feelings are to be considered all the time.”</p>
