Artists, art enthusiasts, and curious visitors converged at the recent ALT Philippines 2024 where nine renowned local galleries offered an expansive and carefully considered range of artists, showcasing work with curated deliberation to enable deeper connections with collectors and the art public.
It was a feast for the senses, especially for people who aren't exposed to the wonderful world of art on a regular basis. Our visit was a wonderful treat to say the least, having explored the space filled to the brim with eye-popping works of art worthy of deep observation and awe.
For ALT Philippines' 3rd edition, there was an estimated 8,000 foot traffic over the course of the three-day public viewing, which was held at the SMX Convention Center in the SM Mall of Asia Complex.
Famed local galleries all over the metro proudly showcased their best offerings this season, from renowned Filipino artists you've most likely heard about already. The lineup included Artinformal, Blanc, The Drawing Room, Galleria Duemila, Finale Art File, Mo_Space, Underground, Vinyl on Vinyl, and West Gallery.

The exhibit featured not just works of art mounted on walls—ALT focused on drawing the viewer even deeper by infusing the space with Project Spaces and installations, making the experience richer for anyone who thirsts for more. Such one example is Pete Jimenez and his installation work seen below. 'Jimenez turns to a more mundane, seemingly nondescript material, large cement sacks that are repurposed by junkyards to collect objects of various materials. Taking off from a passage from the Bible, in the Book of Matthew, the installation of more than thirty giant cement sacks were intuitively and spontaneously arranged in an installation titled 'A City Set on a Hill Cannot be Hidden'.
At the center of the room is a work of art that you literally can't miss—Oca Villamiel's 'Water is Life', a sparkling centerpiece for ALT 2024. The installation artwork consists of countless strips of silver foil that reflect our countless lives—they shift and dance, affected by our decisions. Light tiptoes on the surface, akin to that on water as it undulates. As we move, it moves.'
Apart from such magnificent creations, guests had the privilege of joining select talks on different days, including thought-provoking themes and topics such as 'Photography is the Future', 'New Media: Everything Else is Decor', and 'Female Artists as Risk Takers.'
Paintings, mixed media, installations, sculpture, photography, sound, and new media—they had it all at ALT. In case you missed out on the event this year, check out the gallery below to see more scenes from the energetic art scene witnessed on those days:
