MANILA — Two regional wage boards have approved increases in the minimum wage of workers in private establishments in Calabarzon and the Central Visayas, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) announced on Monday.

The adjustments range from P21 to P75 per day for Calabarzon workers and P33 to P43 per day for Central Visayas workers.

The new wage increase in Calabarzon will take effect on September 30, 2024, or five days from the anniversary date of the previous regional wage increase.

The increase brings the daily minimum wages to P450-P560 in the non-agriculture sector; P425-P500 in the agriculture sector; and P425 in retail and service establishments employing not more than 10 workers upon full implementation of all tranches.

In Central Visayas, the new wage order will take effect on October 2, 2024, the day immediately following the anniversary date of the previous regional wage order. The increase brings the daily minimum wages from P458-P468 to P501 for Class A; P425-P430 to P463 for Class B; and P415-P420 to P453 for Class C.

According to DOLE, the wage orders were issued following President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.’s Labor Day directive to the RTWPBs to review regional minimum wage rates prior to the anniversary dates of previous wage increases.

Minimum wages in the Philippines vary by region and by type of work, with wages lower in less developed areas to encourage investment and to supposedly reflect lower costs of living.

Labor groups have called for a nationwide minimum wage instead of the regional ones that wage boards set in consultation with workers and employers, saying prices are high everywhere.

The wage orders are expected to directly benefit a total of 1.2 million minimum wage earners in these regions, DOLE said. Apart from wage orders, workers can form unions and enter collective bargaining agreements for better pay and benefits. Congress can also legislate wage increases. - with reports from Annie Perez, ABS-CBN News
