MANILA -- Ayala-led ACMobility has launched its newest electric vehicle (EV) charging hub at a mall in Parañaque.

It targets to reach over 100 charging stations by the end of the year, from the current 70.

ACMobility Chief Executive Officer Jaime Alfonso Zobel de Ayala remains bullish on the growth of electric vehicle adoption in the country citing EVs as sustainable, environment-friendly, and having cleaner energy sources.

He also asserts that EV usage is cost-efficient in the long run.

"In an emerging economy like the Philippines, EVs stand out to be more economical. With EVs, your peso goes further," said Zobel de Ayala.

He added that the new charging hub, located at the Ayala Malls Manila Bay, is now the standard of all their charging stations due to the hub's location, as well as features.

"This is a model of what we can do nationwide. We can ensure that we put in the best spaces in our real estate, that we connect it, we make it reliable, that over time it's much more affordable than the alternative of fuel as well," he said.

ACMobility Head for Mobility Infrastructure Carla Buencamino said the new hub can serve many types of EVs- including private cars, fleet vehicles, as those are used for public transportation.

"It's one of our first charging sites to offer both AC charging and DC fast charging. With this mix of power capacities, we're able to serve multiple types of vehicles at different speeds," she said.

The charging is also connected to the Evro mobile phone application. The app can identify a nearby charging station or one that is along one's route. It also identifies the charging availability and capability of a particular station.

Company officials said they will add more charging stations, especially in provinces. They admitted that infrastructure remains a challenge resulting in 'range anxiety' or the fear that EV will have insufficient charge during a trip.

"We recognize the critical need to provide widespread infrastructure, more importantly in quality locations that are convenient for our customers. This is the key in addressing range anxiety," said Zobel de Ayala.

ACMobility is checking for other properties under the Ayala group where they can set up new EV charging hubs. They said they are also willing to partner with other companies for the expansion of electric vehicle charging stations in the country.
