The survey showed that 4 out of 5 companies are willing to hire SHS graduates, while 2 out of 5 are ready with policies in place to hire them, according to PBEd.

“Things are looking up for senior high school graduates compared to five years ago, but there's still much to do. Looking at how the K-12 program is being put into practice, our study confirms what we have been saying all along: the problem with K-12 is not by design, but in its implementation,” said PBEd Executive Director Justine Raagas.

The study also showed that 46 percent of the respondents currently employ SHS graduates, with large firms more likely to hire compared to MSMEs.

Almost half of the companies also confirmed having available job openings for SHS graduates, specifically in areas of personal service work, sales, and clerical support, PBEd said.

Despite this, only 27 percent of entry-level jobs in 2024 were projected to be filled by K to 12 graduates due to a preference for applicants with college degrees. Additionally, 1 out of 5 employers still looked for work experience among applicants, even for entry-level positions, PBEd added.

The group said the government should continue its review of the SHS curriculum to ensure its practical implementation.

"This includes tailoring competencies to align with industry needs, strengthening work immersion, and providing better career guidance and labor market information. Likewise, industry leaders must also have a deeper understanding of the skills K to 12 graduates bring while setting clear and reasonable hiring standards as well as providing relevant training opportunities and upskilling programs," it added.
