The globally renowned Filipino-flavored fries brand "Potato Corner" has launched in Ontario, Canada.

The brand recently opened a pop-up store in  Mississauga's food district in Square One.

Many came early to line up and get a taste of their favorite Filipino french fries.

Among them were siblings Melissa and Marvin Rasonabe, who traveled for over an hour from Oshawa.

"It's like a childhood memory for us that's delicious in the Philippines," said Melissa. "We'll surely miss it. We're delighted."

Even non-Filipinos joined the queue to try the unique flavors of Potato Corner.

Philippine Consul General Angelica Escalona expressed her excitement for the growing presence of Filipino brands in the Canadian market.

"This shows that Filipino brands are world-class," she said. "This is something to be proud of. We encourage our 'Kababayans' to bring their friends, especially their Canadian friends."

Nelson Rodriguez first thought of bringing Potato Corner to Canada in 2019, opening a store in Edmonton, Alberta.

He shared that it took five years of meticulous planning to finally bring Potato Corner to Ontario, and choose Square One in Mississauga for the pop-up's location.

"Ontario is the biggest market, and has the most Filipino population," he said. "What we want when we go to Ontario is the same thing: to be in the biggest and most popular mall. Naturally, we want to ensure that we will be successful here, which I'm pretty sure we will be."

Potato Corner partnered with seasoned entrepreneur Elaine Virola for their expansion in Ontario.

"Normally, I can only eat this when in the U.S. and the Philippines," she said. "You have to meet the requirements, the qualifications, and the drive [should] always be there."

Aside from its signature flavors, customers can also choose from habanero, truffle, corn, peri-peri, as well as jalapeno, and chili barbecue.

The pop-up event will run until Aug. 31. But Rodriguez announced plans to open a permanent store in Ontario this year.

He said the investment not only expands the presence of the Philippines' franchising business in Canada, but also creates job opportunities.
