MANILA - The MRT-3 and LRT-2 are offering free rides on April 9 to mark the Day of Valor holiday, the Department of Transportation said on Monday.

MRT-3 Passengers can avail of free rides during the railway's peak hours which run from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

World War 2 veterans and their companions are also exempted from paying fares during the entire operating hours of the railway, the DOTr said. This is in celebration of Philippine Veterans Week. The free rides will be offered to veterans up to April 11, the DOTr said.

The Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) is giving free rides on April 9 or Araw ng Kagitingan.

The LRT-2 earlier said it is also giving free rides to both veterans and the general public on April 9 from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

In a statement, Light Rail Transit Authority Administrator Atty. Hernando Cabrera said this is their way of honoring veterans and modern-day heroes.

April 9 marks the Fall of Bataan, when Filipino and American soldiers surrendered to the Japanese army on April 9, 1942 during World War 2, after holding out for several months.
