MANILA -- Finance app GCash is now allowing some Filipinos abroad to register on the app even if they’re using a foreign SIM.

GCash International General Manager Paul Albano said that normally, only Philippine SIM can be used to register and use GCash, but now Filipinos in 13 countries or territories can register using their local SIM in their respective countries. He added that this would benefit overseas Filipinos who had to bring their Philippine SIM abroad all the time.

“It’s a challenge maintaining that SIM. Sometimes they run out of load. The clamor has been to allow them to use their local mobile number in the country they are residing or living or working at,” said Albano.

This covers 13 countries and territories initially: US, Canada, Australia, UK, Italy, Germany, Spain, UAE, Qatar, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Coming soon are Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Singapore.

“They get access to the same GCash experience and solutions as if they were back home here in the Philippines so that they’re more in control of their finances and eventually their lives,” he added.

Users in the countries mentioned can send money to loved ones in the Philippines via the app, and pay bills as well. GCash will add more services in the coming months, so that GCash users abroad would also have similar experience as those in the Philippines.

Filipino tourists can also now use the GCash app in 17 countries and territories with low exchange rate and no service charge. The app is also integrated with the national QR system of South Korea and Malaysia, aside from the Philippines.
