MANILA - Nominations are now open for the EY Entrepreneur of the Year Philippines 2024 award after the SGV Foundation, Inc. launched the almost year-long search for the next winner on Wednesday.
The EOYP program honors the country’s top entrepreneurs for their contributions to the economy and society.
In line with this year’s theme of “Shaping Opportunities”, event co-presenters Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) and the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) said they are looking for entrepreneurs who are coming up with innovative ways to advance economic and national development in this post-pandemic era.
“The COVID-19 and the pandemic, those are not excuses anymore. How do we not just build back better but build forward fairer? How can we rise from the ashes of the pandemic, the recession to build a more equitable, more inclusive, more sustainable country and community of nations?” asked PBSP Executive Director Elvin Ivan Uy.
“We all saw how we transformed some of our businesses to be more resilient after the pandemic. So now that we have found those opportunities, it’s really time to shape those opportunities… and go forward with all these sustainable practices— sustainability finance, ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance), and the like,” echoed Lady Espinosa, AIM’s Integrated Marketing and Communications Director.
Uy also highlighted the importance of using one’s business as a tool to do good and not just to gain profit.
“Before, maybe, the more classical way of doing it is just looking at profit, how do you return that to yourself, to your family, to your shareholders… But for the past three decades, especially during the pandemic and after that, there’s so much attention now on how do we treat our own people, our employees, people who are part of our supply chains and value chains. If you’re in agriculture, for example, are you able to help small farmers? What’s your impact on the planet?” he said.
This is what investors are eyeing nowadays as well, said Philippine Stock Exchange President Ramon Monzon, who also partnered with SGV for the program as a way to provide winning entrepreneurs the platform for capital raising as they grow bigger.
“That’s one of the new developments in capital formation. A lot of the investors are really focusing on companies with very clear ESG directions. You’ve got these investors now that invest in sustainability bonds, green bonds, talagang ‘yan ang hinahanap nila ngayon,” he said.
The five award categories this year are Master Entrepreneur, Small Business Entrepreneur, Young Entrepreneur, Woman Entrepreneur, and Technology Entrepreneur.
From among these category winners will emerge the EY Entrepreneur of the Year 2024 Philippines who will represent the country in the EY World Entrepreneur of the Year in Monte Carlo, Monaco in 2025.
Past winners include Converge ICT Solutions, Inc. Chief Executive Officer and co-founder Dennis Uy in 2022, Planters Development Bank Chairman and President Ambassador Jesus Tambunting in 2009, and Jollibee Foods Corporation President and CEO Tony Tan Caktiong in 2003, which was the year the EOYP was first launched.
The nomination period will run until June after which the organizers will deliberate and announce the winners by October.
To be eligible, a nominee has to be a Filipino business owner or founder who is primarily responsible for the company’s recent performance. The nominee must still be active in the top-level management of a business that is at least two years old.
