MANILA -- SPX Express, the logistics partner of e-commerce platform Shopee, has launched its largest sorting center in Calamba, Laguna, which can handle over 3 million parcels per day.

SPX Express head Martin Yu said the 25,000-sqm facility is their first fully automated sorting center with machines that can scan the packages and sort them per destination automatically. The new facility employs over a thousand workers, he said.

Yu said in terms of capacity, the Calamba center is the company's largest in Southeast Asia.

“Being automated, this state-of-the-art facility has smart cameras scanning the parcels, reading the airway bills, making sure it moves through as quickly as possible with minimal delays,” he added.

Having an automated sorting center will speed up the delivery process, officials said, as small parcels stay at the facility for only a few minutes before being sorted out and transferred to the delivery van.

Larger parcels or sacks will be processed in just an hour.

Yu didn’t disclose the amount of investment in this project but said the company may build more large sorting centers to add to their existing 300 hubs or smaller centers across the country.

He expects growth in the e-commerce industry which in turn will also impact the delivery and courier sector.

“E-commerce in the Philippines is growing rapidly. And with the growth of e-commerce, there’s one more volume, but also greater appreciation for buyers who want to receive their parcels faster,” he said.

Calamba Mayor Roseller Rizal welcomed the opening of the center saying it would help small businesses in their city, as well as generate jobs for residents.

“This will definitely help our consumers and our businesses here in Calamba City get their products much more faster and efficiently. This facility will also provide opportunities for our citizens,” Rizal asserted.
