MANILA - Two major flood control projects in Luzon are set to get hefty budget hikes as well as lengthy extensions to their construction period.

The National Economic and Development Authority Board on Tuesday approved changes to the Cavite Industrial Area-Flood Risk Management Project and the Pasig-Marikina River Channel Improvement Project-Phase IV.

For the Cavite project, the total project cost more than doubled to P22 billion from the original P9.9 billion. The construction was extended by 65 months to September 2029. Its original construction period was from October 2019 to April 2024. Among the approved changes were the widening of diversion channels and additional drainage channels.

"The project aims to mitigate flood damage in the lower reach of San Juan River Basin and its adjacent Maalimango Creek Drainage Area in Cavite," NEDA said.

The Pasig-Marikina project meanwhile was extended to March 2031, with the project cost increasing to P57.7 billion from P33.1 billion. It aims to mitigate flood damage in Metro Manila caused by channel overflow of the Pasig-Marikina River.  Residents of Pasig, Marikina, and Quezon City as well as of Taytay and Cainta in Rizal province are expected to benefit from the project.

“The changes in scope and design of our flood-control projects take into account stronger typhoons and changes in rainfall patterns, thereby strengthening our resilience to weather-related disasters,” said NEDA Secretary Arsenio Balisacan.

The NEDA Board approved buying 40 units of fast patrol craft worth P25.8 billion by the Department of Transportation and Philippine Coast Guard. The P27 billion Philippine International Exhibition Center project was also approved.
