Guam, a U.S. island territory located in the northwest Pacific Ocean, lies on the path of typhoons.

Joshua Tenorio, lieutenant governor of Guam, noted that people there are "very resilient just like Filipinos."

"One of the challenges we have is we try and recover as much as we can," he said.

Officials in Guam are working to make the island fully reliant on renewable energy sources by 2045.

For that to happen, Tenorio said they would need help from the outside, "to expand our solar program and get battery storage to help us with our pledge for sustainability.”

A group of Guam energy stakeholders and government leaders gathered in August to discuss ways to transition Guam to 100 percent renewable energy in the next two decades.

Filipino Rino Manzano, CEO of Power Solutions, talked about his company’s initiatives to build a sustainable future for Guam.

“You'll be surprised it's the same situation here in Guam," he said. "You have solar, it's only available during the daytime, so now we are looking at 50 percent; we are going to harvest supply in the daytime."

Manzano added that his firm is determined to maximize the use of new technology.

"We stay up to date and we also work with a lot of industry partners and technology partners," he said.

In their pursuit of sustainable solutions, Manzano emphasized the importance of longevity and adaptability in renewable energy systems.

“The key for us would be something that could still be in use 10 or 20 years from now," he said. "We work with our technology partners trying to identify what would work really for the community that we do want renewable energy."

The Filipino CEO added: "It's not just one product; you need to have a holistic approach. There are a lot of components in there; you need to make sure that everything is compatible. At the end of the day, it should not be too expensive.”

Guam officials are also pushing for renewable energy to lower utility bills for consumers.

The area, which is mainly powered by expensive imported fuel oil, also hosts several energy-intensive U.S. military bases.

Proponents for renewable energy said it is important to keep up with the rest of the world.

“All countries are focused on the transformation energy transition to become more friendly to the environment," said Du Choi, renewable business development officer at SK. "So, they are trying to find new energy sources.”
