MANILA - Cebu Pacific said normal baggage handling operations at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 have been restored.

This was after hundreds of pieces of luggage were left stranded at the airport even after their owners had already departed and arrived at their destinations since Monday.

"We want to assure all passengers that checked baggage for new travel is now being processed as usual," Cebu Pacific said in a statement.

The Gokongwei-led airline said 90 percent of the previously left-behind bags have been recovered and that the company aimed to swiftly deliver any remaining delayed luggage to affected passengers.

"We extend our sincere gratitude to the New NAIA Infrastructure Corp. (NNIC) for their crucial collaboration in resolving the issue. Their dedicated efforts played a key role in restoring operations," the airline said.

AirAsia meanwhile earlier said its operations were unaffected by the baggage handling system glitch as it was able to deploy additional personnel to compensate for the extra manpower needed to sort and deliver the luggage of its clients.

Cebu Pacific also said it is optimistic about NNIC’s ongoing commitment to enhancing airport infrastructure and making further improvements.

NNIC earlier said that the incident showed "the urgent need to upgrade NAIA’s aging infrastructure."

The San Miguel Corp-led consortium said it will replace the 20-year-old baggage handling system and has already procured a new, advanced system, with additional redundancy measures set to be implemented to prevent future disruptions and enhance operational efficiency.

When NNIC took over the operations of the airport last month, it promised to resolve the numerous issues that have plagued the airport including broken walkalators, restrooms, air conditioning systems and others.
