MANILA — The average farmgate price of palay went up last December 2023, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority.

It was recorded at P22.98 per kilo last month, a 30-percent increase from the P17.68 per kilo compared to the same time in December 2022. The rate is also 4.6 percent higher than the P21.96 per kilo recorded in November 2023.

This increase translated to higher retail prices of rice in markets in Metro Manila.

Latest figures from Department of Agriculture's Bantay Presyo showed that the price of rice ranges from P50 to P65 per kilo for imported rice, while P50 to P68 per kilo for local rice.

Consumers are complaining of the high retail price of rice.

"Bawat bili ko, iba ang price. Tumataas po, kaya minsan di ko na alam presyo. Naka budget kasi ako," said Delia Solneo, a consumer at the Mega Q Mart.

"Dati bumibili ako kalahating kaban, ngayon pinagkakasya ko na lang budget, may sampu, may lima, depende sa budget," she added.

The Department of Agriculture is strictly monitoring movements in rice price as El Nino is expected to affect local production.

Inflation eased to 3.9 percent in December 2023, but rice inflation increased further to 19.6 percent during the month from 15.8 percent in November 2023.

National Statistician Dennis Mapa said this is the highest monthly rice inflation recorded in the country since the 22.9 percent posted in March 2009.
