MANILA—Major local airlines on Wednesday announced flight cancellations to and from Caticlan and Kalibo towns in Aklan following the announcement of the closure of Boracay starting April 26.

Philippine Airlines (PAL), in a statement, said several flights from Manila to the two municipalities will be suspended from April 20 to October 27, while flights to Caticlan from Cebu and Clark will be suspended from April 26 to October 27.

It will, however, operate 9 weekly flights between Manila and Kalibo and 7 weekly flights between Manila and Caticlan.

"PAL will scale down its services to Caticlan and Kalibo airports for a six-month period beginning late April, and expand flights to a number of other Philippine tourist and provincial destinations during said period to help ensure the continued growth of domestic tourism," the flag carrier said.

PAL said it will operate additional flights between Manila and Cebu, Iloilo, Puerto Princesa, Bacolod, Dumaguete, and Cagayan de Oro.

Air Asia Philippines said it is also "adding several flights to Cebu, Davao, Palawan, Bohol, Iloilo, and other leisure destinations."

"The impact of Boracay closure on our operation is almost insignificant compared to its effect on our guests, especially those who have saved up their money to be able travel this summer, which is why our focus is on assisting them and providing them with flexible options so as not to disrupt their holiday plans," AirAsia Philippines CEO Dexter Comendador said in a statement.

Air Asia has yet to release its list of cancelled flights to and from Boracay.
