MANILA - Authorities on Thursday urged banks to secure their ATM machines to guard against a new scheme that is being used by criminals abroad.

Under the "jackpotting" racket, a USB drive or CD is inserted into an ATM machine, enabling withdrawals even without using an ATM card, said Manuel Delizo of the Bank Security Management Association’s board of directors.

The scheme has not been reported in the Philippines, he said.

“When the scammers run the program…nako-command na nila yung ATM (they command the ATM), then he or she can withdraw a number of bills directly from the ATM,” he said.

With ATM machine infected with malware, Delizo said up to 40 bills at a time can be withdrawn.

Delizo said Philippine banks have installed additional security features on ATM machines, including locks and keypad covers.
