KimPau may just be serendipity at its finest.

Kim Chiu and Paulo Avelino both entered showbiz in 2006 via reality shows on different networks. Since then, they have carved their own paths: Kim in the romance sphere with her love team partners, and Paulo as a versatile dramatic actor. On his transfer to ABS-CBN in 2011, Paulo mentioned his dream to act with Kim, but few could have predicted that they would eventually team up on a project. Well, as they say, fate has its way.

In an episode of “On Cue” with ABS-CBN News’ MJ Felipe, the KimPau tandem engaged in a delightful conversation about their successful partnership which started in the dark heavy drama “Linlang” and has now crossed over to rom-com through “What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim.”

When reminded of the wish he made back in 2011, Paulo remarked that he wanted to be versatile to the fullest, and he knew that working with Kim would enable him to explore new aspects of himself. Meanwhile, Kim reminisced about their first encounter at a Star Magic Ball, recalling Paulo as a quiet guy in the corner. She was also shy to approach him as she wasn’t as outgoing then as she is now.

Understandably, it took some time before they grew this close while working on “Linlang,” perhaps halfway through the series. When they crossed over to their follow-up project, “What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim,” there was still a wall to overcome, especially considering the stark contrast between their previous and current characters.

“What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim” offers them a fresh reversal of roles, this time, with Kim leading Paulo into her world of rom-com, unlike in the drama-intensive "Linlang," where he was more within his comfort zone.

Rom-coms have become quite an expertise for Kim. Somehow, she’s learned the formula for ‘kilig’ scenes. However, she underscored that some elements can’t be faked, such as chemistry. “Pero yung kilig naman is hindi naman siya one-way. Dapat two-way siya para mag-transform sa audience,” she remarked, thanking Paulo for his contribution to their chemistry. As for Paulo, the genre also brought out a more natural side of him.

Having been paired with various actors previously, Kim was asked what sets Paulo apart, and she answered about witnessing his different versions in a short period, transitioning from intense drama to light-hearted romance.

“So, parang nakita ko na ‘yung Paulo na masayahin, Paulo na galit, Paulo na sobrang dedicated at seryoso, and Paulo na corny. Ang dami niyang pinakitang types of Paulo.” Above all, she admires his dedication and self-awareness.

When posed with the same question, Paulo praised the Chinita Princess' contagious energy, stating, "Her mood sets the mood of the set. If she’s happy, the set is happy. If she’s quiet, parang ‘yung buong set rin tahimik.”

KimPau may not have started their partnership with teenybopper romances like many love teams, but audiences of all ages find them refreshing and naturally 'nakaka-good vibes.' Kim admitted that even they are surprised at fans’ kilig reactions to their simple on- and off-cam interactions, “Parang, ha? Teenagers ba kami para bigyan ng meaning lahat ng bagay?”

Albeit surprised, they appreciate the fact that people take notice of their actions and turn them into their source of joy. Speaking of which, fans were ecstatic to see them sporting matching Taylor Swift shirts, Kim's in white and Paulo's in black. And we bet all KimPau shippers will smile ear to ear as Kim confirms that the shirt was her ‘pasalubong’ for Paulo, brought from Singapore where she flew for just a day to attend Taylor's concert.

Offering a glimpse into their charming chemistry as Secretary Kim and BMC, their characters in their new digital series, KimPau engaged in a playful Q&A session. They played "bato bato pick," where the loser of each round would answer a question chosen by the winner.

Kim lost in the first two rounds, granting Paulo the chance to select questions from a bowl. "What's cute about me?" he read aloud, to which Kim replied, “Everything. Cute siya kasi hindi siya nagsasalita.”

Then, came a hypothetical question about what Kim would prefer their term of endearment to be if they were a couple. She suggested "Mine.”

Being the gentleman that he is, Paulo willingly accepted defeat so he could answer two questions as well. When asked how he’d apologize to Kim if she feels upset, he thought about preparing her favorite food.

For the final question regarding Kim’s sweetest trait, he sincerely remarked, “I think your sweetest trait is you have genuine care for others.”
