Not all of us may not have a lovely relationship with our grandparents, yet they are arguably among the best people in our lives. While our parents tend to be strict in raising us, our lolos and lolas would often shower us with their overwhelming love by giving us almost everything we want and pampering us whenever we are with them. Besides, they also love to impart nuggets of wisdom that they’ve picked up as they went through life in the past decades.

Since we, Filipinos, are known for our close family ties and grandparents are important figures in every household, we have surely encountered a number of elderly characters in teleseryes through the years. They may not be usually the main characters, but their interesting roles and intriguing storylines allow them to steal the show.

Let’s meet some of the most remarkable onscreen lolas and lolas in this Kapamilya Update feature!

First off is Tindeng of FPJ’s Batang Quiapo, compellingly portrayed by showbiz veteran actress Charo Santos. She may appear tough, but she’s actually doting especially when it comes to her first grandson Tanggol (Coco Martin). Ever since he was born, Tindeng has served as his constant protector, particularly whenever his father Rigor (John Estrada) would assault him.

Despite not being related by blood and having a rocky start, these didn’t hinder Ali (Kathryn Brenardo) and Hugo (Ronaldo Valdez), who she fondly called “Lolo Sir,” from having a lovely bond that truly got the ardent viewers of 2 Good 2 Be True surely engrossed. Who would forget that tear-jerking scene when he handed his private nurse-slash-granddaughter-in-law a special gift – a personalized stethoscope – and told her how she had already cured him.

For sure, hearts were also pierced as Mikmik (Sophia Reola) and her Lolo David (Dante Rivero) of Nang Ngumiti Ang Langit (2019) bade farewell to each other as the latter agreed to be incarcerated to pay for the crimes he committed.

The same certainly happened when Cardo (Coco Martin) expressed his resentment towards his estranged Lola Flora (Susan Roces), who he assumed had completely abandoned him after she decided to have him adopted by a well-off couple due to his being sickly. But, as we all know, all’s well that ends well between as they endeared us with their tight bond every weeknight in FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano.

A lot of hearts also shattered as we witnessed the tear-jerking moment between Heart (Heart Ramos) and her Lola-Doktora Margaret (Coney Reyes) in the 2017 series My Dear Heart, wherein the little ghostly girl already considered not going back to her body anymore and live. But she had a sudden change of heart during her touching conversation with Doktora Margaret, who advised her to look at the positive side of things.

We also felt the longing and elation among Joy (Francine Diaz), Mira (Andrea Brillantes), and Barang (Sylvia Sanchez) when they finally found out that they’re actually related by blood. Although they’d spent a lot of time together, it was only in the latter part of the 2021 inspirational drama Huwag Kang Mangamba, when the real connection among them was unveiled.

And lastly, Coco had an emotional encounter with another onscreen grandma in the 2009 series Tayong Dalawa, wherein he played Ramon, the dutiful grandson of Gina Pareño’s character Lola Gets. We certainly got heartbroken as we watch them saying goodbye to each other as Lola Gets was slowly succumbing to her illness, while Ramon apparently didn’t want to let go of her just yet.

Kapamilya, which of these teleserye scenes truly pierced your heart the most?
