Friends are said to be the extension of our families because they are among the people whom we trust and depend on and who know us deeply more than anyone else. Thus, it’s absolutely painful if they would betray us or do things that would offend us. Since it happens a lot in real life, friendship betrayal is one of the most recurring themes in the Kapamilya teleseryes that we’ve seen over the years, such as the ones included in this feature.

Hiram, 2004

From being best friends, “Hiram”’s Stephanie (Anne Curtis) and Margaret (Heart Evangelista) saw their friendship crumbling when Andrew (Geoff Eigenmann), the handsome guy with whom both of them fell in love, suddenly came into their lives. He used to be Harry, with whom Margaret almost had a relationship, but got impeded when he suffered amnesia after a car crash.

Stephanie felt bitter and brokenhearted upon finding this out, which enkindled her wrath against Margaret and even severed her friendship with her. On the other hand, despite the evil schemes of Stephanie against her and her love for Andrew, Margaret decided to step out of their way and let them be rather than hurting or getting angry at her best friend.

Tayong Dalawa, 2009

Before it was revealed that they were actually twins in “Tayong Dalawa,” Dave (Jake Cuenca) and JR (Gerald Anderson) used to be the best of friends, which both their families highly disapproved, except their father David Sr. (Miguel Faustman) who was supportive of them as he even attended their graduation from the Philippine Military Academy (PMA).

The discovery of their real identities sparked further friction not just between their families but to the two of them, made worse by their mutual love for Audrey (Kim Chiu). As JR and Audrey became a couple, it totally devastated Dave and regarded his best friend as a traitor for taking from him everything that matters to him.

Rubi, 2009

Their friendship already started in a wrong way as the scheming titular character Rubi (Angelica Panganiban) only befriended Maribel (Shaina Magdayao) because she’s wealthy and it was easy to take advantage of her considering her condition. And in a sudden twist of events, it was discovered that Rubi was the long-lost adopted child of Maribel’s foster parents, which took a toll on their bond. The arrival of best friends Hector (Diether Ocampo) and Alejandro (Jake Cuenca) further worsened the tension between them that sometimes resulted in catfights.

In one instance, Rubi accused Maribel of destroying her relationship with Alejandro by letting him catch her flirting with another guy at their school. Rubi assumed that Maribel was sabotaging her because she was jealous that it was her who first met Hector and not her when they set them up on a date.

Maria La Del Barrio, 2011-2012

Ever since her mother, Sandra (Assunta de Rossi), died when she was still a kid, “Maria La Del Barrio”’s titular character Maria (Erich Gonzales) had gone through a lot of hardships in life, only to find out that she’s actually a part owner of Amore Designs, one of the top furniture companies in the country. It was because her mother used to be the best friend and business partner of Victoria (Angel Aquino), who double-crossed her out of desperation by taking the ownership of Amore and her then-boyfriend Fernando (Ian Veneracion). This, of course, infuriated Sandra, which led to the end of their friendship.

Kahit Puso’y Masugatan, 2012-2013

We’ve already seen many complicated love connections onscreen over the years and one of them was the story of best friends Andrea (Iza Calzado) and Veronica (Andi Eigenmann) in “Kahit Puso’y Masugatan,” whose sisterly love for one another was put to the test after they fell in love with the same man, Rafael (Jake Cuenca). Apparently, Andrea and Rafael were almost bound to get married, but the possessive and devil-may-care Veronica entered the picture and took him away from her without any sign of remorse.

Ina, Kapatid, Anak, 2012-2013

The once-sweet connection between Celyn (Kim Chiu) and Margaux (Maja Salvador) as best friends in “Ina, Kapatid, Anak” eventually turned sour when the former informed the latter’s mom Beatrice (Janice de Belen) about her decision to elope with her boyfriend Ethan (Enchong Dee). This infuriated Margaux because she couldn’t believe that her best friend would betray her and their ferocious feud began.

As Ethan got lonely and depressed after what happened and Margaux denied their relationship, he got closer with Celyn, prompting Margaux to accuse her of snatching her boyfriend away from her and to continuously taunt her. Margaux’s hatred of Celyn further escalated when it was revealed that the former’s dad Julio (Ariel Rivera) was connected with the latter’s mom Theresa (Cherry Pie Picache). This made Margaux and Beatrice assume that Theresa was his paramour and tagged Celyn as one as well, only to find out that Celyn was actually her long-lost twin.

The Legal Wife, 2014

Monica (Angel) and Nicole (Maja) used to be childhood best friends in “The Legal Wife,” but circumstances in their adulthood tore them apart. Aside from discovering that they share the same father in Dante (Mark Gil), they also found out that they were in love with the same man, Adrian (Jericho). The marriage of Monica and Adrian was not happy at all, so he got drawn to his wife’s best friend Nicole and had an illicit affair with her.

Finding the love, care, and attention she’d been looking for in every man she got in a relationship with, Nicole got deeply smitten by him and betrayed Monica. Adrian and Nicole’s forbidden romance eventually got exposed, which led to a series of explosive showdowns and emotional encounters between the two women who once regarded each other as sisters.

Pusong Ligaw, 2017-2018

Tessa (Beauty Gonzalez) and Marga (Bianca King) once had a beautiful and solid friendship in “Pusong Ligaw,” until Caloy (Joem Bascon), who used to be Marga’s beau came into their lives. However, she suddenly had a change of heart and mind about him when he was already in a relationship with Tessa.

Marga’s desire to win him back prompted her to take advantage of his fragility and jealousy towards Tessa’s mentor Jaime Laurel (Raymond Bagatsing) by seducing him and challenging his loyalty in Tessa, which led to them spending the night together after getting drunk. The devastated Tessa caught them and lashed out at them, but instead of apologizing, Marga even pinned the blame on her for why they betrayed her.

Ang Sa Iyo Ay Akin, 2020-2021

In their younger years, best friends Marissa (Jodi Sta. Maria) and Ellice (Iza Calzado) in “Ang Sa Iyo Ay Akin” used to be inseparable. Unfortunately, their unbreakable bond was shattered because of a crime, in which the political scion of their town was killed by Ellice out of self-defense. However, in exchange for a hefty amount and the promise of Ellice’s dad to immediately bail her out, Marissa was compelled to own it up.

But that didn’t happen as Marissa went on to spend years in prison and went through a slew of ordeals before she was granted parole. Thus, she vowed to exact revenge on Ellice by taking everything that’s important to her, such as their family business and her husband Gabriel (Sam Milby). Marissa indeed succeeded at some point in her vengeful scheme as she was able to acquire the biggest share in her company and even got herself pregnant by Gabriel. They had a slew of showdowns as both of them wanted to get rid of each other out of immense anger and wanting to exact revenge for the betrayal committed by one another.

Mars Ravelo’s Darna, 2022-2023

It’s indeed rare for us to see two supposed enemies becoming friends, right? And that’s the case of “DarLentina,” the ship name coined by fans for the onscreen tandem of Jane de Leon and Janella Salvador in “Mars Ravelo’s Darna.” Being the ever-kindhearted and optimistic that she was, Narda still chose to understand and care for Regina even though she kept on pushing her away. However, instead of showing appreciation to Narda or reciprocating the love and care she poured onto her, Regina still chose to transform into Valentina and let some of her slick and venomous friends bite her repeatedly.

Which of these teleserye friendship betrayals is/are the most remarkable for you, Kapamilya?
