He is deeply in love with her and he’s not scared to let her know through words and actions, albeit rejected many times over. Lucas felt worried as Mara nears the fruition of her years-long training, leading her to the mission of killing Don Ignacio (Tommy Abuel). He wanted to take over, not because he wishes validation but he’s scared something bad might happen to her. Lucas confessed his true feelings, which Mara dismissed.

He begged for another chance, which she rejected again. Friendship is all she could give. Catching the argument, their friends teased them for having a lover’s quarrel. It turns out even the people around them knew Lucas always had special feelings for Mara but she vowed to never like him back in a romantic light.

In a scene with his brother Samuel (Michael Flores), Lucas recalled the first time he realized his feelings for Mara, saying nothing has changed since. But they’re indebted to Armando (John Estrada), Mara’s foster father, which adds a little heaviness in their friendship.

Lucas proved his love for Mara when he offered himself to take over the mission of killing Don Ignacio, knowing how dangerous the task would be. Then again, Mara insisted, and at least they could all move forward once she finishes the old man.

Desperate, and in love, Lucas swallowed his pride to ask Cardo’s help in finding Mara. He’s willing to befriend even his enemies for her sake.
