South Korean actor Yoo Ah-in was found guilty by the Seoul Central District Court earlier this week for his habitual drug use. The high profile case has been tried for more than a year in court.

Yoo Ah-in will now face a year in jail as reported by South Korean news agency Yonhap News.

His sentence comes after he was found guilty of illegal use of the anesthetic drug propofol. Yoo Ah-in was accused of using the said anesthetic drug for over 181 times between 2020 to 2022.

Propofol is mostly used as a surgical anesthetic but could sometimes be misused for recreation— which the South Korean actor allegedly did. The drug is usually administered by medical professionals who are willing to provide it without the person's actual need for it.

Despite the prosecution’s asking for a four-year jail sentence, only one year of prison time was given as the court only deemed him guilty of buying the drugs illegally.

“He is deemed guilty of all his purchases for habitual drug use," the court stated in its ruling.

Additionally, the court ruled that the Hellbound actor had committed the offenses ”in disregard of relevant regulations” and displayed a “lack of caution against drug substances.”

Meanwhile, the doctor who administered the drugs for Yoo Ah-in without a proper prescription was fined 40 million won ($30,000) last month.

The South Korean actor has since expressed his apologies towards his supporters for his illegal use of the drug.

“I am sorry for having caused concern to many people,” Yonhap News reported.

He is the latest South Korean actor to have been investigated by the police for illegal drug use. One of the more famous stars questioned was BIGBANG leader G-Dragon last year but the case was dropped after insufficient evidence was found.

Yoo Ah-in rose to fame in the South Korean entertainment industry for his impeccable acting performances in several of his TV shows.
