Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio has called out for the continuous protection and preservation of the Masungi Georeserve.

On his Instagram page, Leonardo highlighted the vital role of the Masungi Geopark Project in the conservation of the area throughout the years.

"Masungi is a lush montane rainforest landscape outside of Manila, the bustling capital of the Philippines. In the late 1990s, much of Masungi was illegally deforested. Local communities fostered the development of the @masungigeoreserve, spurring efforts to restore this precious ecosystem. From these conservation initiatives, trees were able to grow taller, wildlife numbers slowly increased, and more locals became involved in protecting this ecosystem," he remarked.

The actor then pointed out that the success of the conservation efforts is "in jeopardy" as "The Department of Environment and Natural Resources threatens to cancel the agreement that protects this area from prolific land grabbing activities."

The Titanic star emphasized that the cancellation "would set back the success of an internationally acclaimed conservation effort and leave the area vulnerable again to mining, logging, and illegal developments."

Leonardo encouraged his followers to join in the efforts in urging the government to protect Masungi Georeserve.

"Join local rangers in calling on President @bongbongmarcos to intervene and continue to protect Masungi. Conservation successes like Masungi serve as a reminder that the Philippines can become a leader in sustainability, eco-tourism, biodiversity protection, and climate action. Protect Masungi Georeserve," he said.

Filipinos online expressed their gratitude to Leonardo for rallying behind the protection of the area.

"Thank you for bringing this to light, Leo! Masungi needs to be preserved at all costs! The heat in the Philippines is close to unbearable. Trees are going down left and right here in the name of ‘progress.’ That you’ve shown this plight to the world, I hope, will make a difference 🙏," one Filipino netizen wrote.

In 2022, the Masungi Georeserve Project became the recipient of the Inspire Award at the 2022 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDG) Action Awards held in Bonn, Germany.

The Action Awards honored Masungi for its initiatives in transforming watersheds to combat deforestation through geotourism. Additionally, Masungi was praised for its public engagement, innovative storytelling, and the commitment of its activists, rangers, and environmental defenders.
