It was on April 8, 2024 that Direk Joey was officially appointed as head of the national film council, succeeding former FDCP Chair Tirso Cruz III. The FDCP was established in June 2002 by virtue of RA 9167 and is under the Office of the President. According to its official website, it is “the national agency in charge of creating and implementing policies and programs to ensure the economic, cultural, and educational development and growth of the Philippine film industry.” It aims to encourage the film industry to create quality films – from development to production, to distribution and exhibition—and to conduct film-related events that enhance the skills of Filipino talents.

It was just last month that Tirso’s leadership prematurely came to an end. He only held office for one year and seven months, after which he stepped down due to personal reasons.

Direk Joey Reyes previously served as FDCP’s technical consultant during Tirso’s term. Effective April 8, he officially took on the responsibilities as head of the council.

The FDCP’s work continues, with the next big event being the “Parangal ng Sining” set to happen on April 19. It is an annual recognition of exemplary Filipino artists, scholars, and organizations in acknowledgement of their significant contributions to Philippine cinema.
