South Korean actress Lee Young-ae is set to reprise her role as Dae Jang-geum from the hit K-Drama series Jewel in the Palace.

According to a report by Naver as translated by Soompi, entertainment company Fantiago confirmed that the series will begin filming this year.

"The blockbuster historical drama Uinyeo Dae Jang Geum is gearing up to start filming in October. With lead actress Lee Young Ae having been cast last year in June, we recently wrapped up signing the contract with the drama scriptwriter," Fantiago said.

The sequel will follow the story of Jang-geum as she becomes a female physician following what transpired in the story of Jewel in the Palace. Uinyeo Dae Jang Geum is set to air in 2025.

Jewel in the Palace aired from September 15, 2003 to March 23, 2004 on MBC. The series was also released abroad and was credited as one of the series that promoted the Korean Wave in the global arena.

The series follows the story of a young orphan who rises from a kitchen cook to become the King's first female physician. 

In an era when women had limited roles, Jang-geum, a determined apprentice cook, seeks to master Korean culinary and medicinal arts to heal the King's illnesses.

Young-ae received the Grand Prize and the Top Excellence Award at the 2003 MBC Awards for her performance in the series.

Meanwhile, actors Yang Mi-kyung and Lim Hyun-sik received the Special Acting Awards. The show also won Best Screenplay which was written by Kim Young-hyun.

Aside from Jewel in the Palace, Young-ae starred in several dramas throughout her career, including Inspector Koo and Maestra: Strings of Truth.

Meanwhile, on the big screen, she starred in the films Last Present, One Fine Spring Day, and Lady Vengeance.

Her performance in Lady Vengeance earned her Best Actress awards at the 42nd Baeksang Arts Awards, 38th Sitges Film Festival, and 26th Blue Dragon Film Awards.
