Filipina talents Gehlee Dangca and Elisia Parmisano, who are both members of global girl group UNIS, shared how the other members helped them adapt to the culture in South Korea. The eight-member girl group faced members of the press during the media conference held in the country last October prior to their highly-anticipated fan concert.

Gehlee and Elisia are the only full Filipino members of the group while their leader Hyeonju is half-Korean and half-Filipino.

When asked about how they adjusted to the Korean culture, both Philippine-born artists admitted having difficulty at first.

“I feel like in the beginning, there were a lot of differences but I feel like we were really open minded towards one another and over time, things got a lot easier,” Gehlee admitted.

“Of course there were a lot of stuff we had to overcome in the beginning especially with the culture differences and the language because kahit papaano, there are some major differences syempre me and ate Gehlee are really shocked about when we came to Korea but thankfully the Koreans and Japanese members are very patient with us and they helped us a lot in adjusting so they made us more comfortable in adapting the culture,” Elisia said.

Gehlee added that because of each other’s curiosity about their cultures, they were able to adjust and adapt quickly.

“I feel like in UNIS it highlights the differences in our cultures and how well we can mix together as diverse colors of the rainbow. I feel like that’s a cute metaphor to describe us with and if you open your heart and mind to new things and cultures, then you can really get something beautiful out of it. You can take UNIS as an example of that,” she said.

For Elisia, their dedication to enter the music industry was a motivation for them to adjust and adapt faster. She maintained that having the correct mindset became a determining factor to learning about other cultures.

“Since we were both really dedicated and we really love what we’re doing and we enjoy this industry, we find the motivation within ourselves to actually adapt to that culture in Korea,” she continued.

Gehlee and Elisia will continue to promote with UNIS for a total of two years and six months. They became members of the global girl group after making it to the final lineup of the survival show, Universe Ticket.
