90s heartthrob Patrick Guzman dies of a heart attack in Canada

Known as one of Philippine showbiz’s top heartthrobs in the 90s, Fil-Canadian actor Patrick Guzman passed away at the age of 55. 

Veteran entertainment journalist Aster Amoyo confirmed the news in a Facebook post on Saturday, June 17. 

She wrote: "My heartfelt condolences and prayers to the bereaved family of actor Patrick Guzman who died of [a] heart attack this morning, June 17 (Manila time) in Toronto, Canada.”

One of Patrick’s former colleagues in the industry, Eagle Riggs, remembered the late actor in his feed as he shared his fondest memories of him.

“Rest in Peace, dear Patrick Guzman. We used to work together in [ABS-CBN's] Sunday TV game show Ready Get Set Go in the 90s with Eric Quizon, Eula Valdez, [and] Michael V.," he said. 

"After our show ended, we lost contact and just got reconnected again last pandemic. Sharing you our Convo as if we never said our goodbyes. Go with God PAT. You will always be in our memories," Eagle added.

Actress Beverly Vergel also shared a heartfelt tribute recalling [the] last time she took a photo with Patrick during a trip to Canada in 2019.

Beverly said the photo was taken while filming a movie where Patrick was the lead star. 

She wrote: “This photo was taken at your place when Von (producer) and I were 'location hunting' for BROmance The Movie, a film that I wrote and directed, produced by MCBN.

While Beverly admitted that Patrick was hesitant at first, she said he still accepted the role.

"I was excited to have you as the lead actor. You said yes without seeing the script! Thank you for your trust, Patrick," Beverly said. 

"Although you expressed reluctance because you haven’t acted onscreen for a long time, it was a full-length comedy film," she added. 

"I assured you that there’s nothing to worry about because I’ll run a workshop to prep everyone, and you gamely agreed," she continued. 

Beverly recalled how it was for them to do the workshop to prepare him for the role.

"I’ll never forget how happy you were at doing a comedy workshop. You enjoyed the funny and silly exercises despite the whole body workout. It was one full day of laughter. I will forever cherish those memories," she said. 

"I know the entire cast and crew will surely miss you!!! You are our very own and Canada’s PAPA P!!!" she added. 

Meanwhile, Beverly offered her condolences to Patrick's family. 

"Our deepest condolences to your wife Liezle, son, and the loved ones you left behind. RIP PATRICK," she said.



Patrick started out in showbiz as a model and celebrity endorser, which eventually paved the way for his career in the entertainment industry.

During his prime, he starred in local films like Sa Piling ng Iba, Una Kang Naging Akin, Koronang Itim, and Asawa Mo, Misis Ko.

Throughout his career, he was able to do over 40 films before deciding to relocate to Canada, where he is survived by his non-showbiz wife, Chat, and their only son Aiden.
