South Korean actor Lee Jong-suk said that his girlfriend IU's presence in his life gives him strength and comfort.

In an interview with Esquire Korea, Jong-suk opened up about his relationship with IU and shared the massive impact that the singer has made on his life.

"It might sound like a cliché if I say that her existence itself gives me [a place to] rely on and strength. But so many other people besides myself are comforted by her music, her lyrics, and her comforting words. It’s the same for me, too," he said in the interview.

"The only difference is that I receive that kind of comfort while having a conversation [with her]."

The South Korean star also highlighted how friendship has played a role in their relationship.

"Above all, we’ve been friends for quite some time, and I find her to be the funniest friend in the whole world. As I mentioned before, when entering my 30s, I was comforted a lot by that person who was my friend," he stated.

Jong-suk added that his relationship with IU inspires him to become a more mature and better person.

"We’ve been friends since I was in my mid-20s, which means that we met each other when we were quite young. So, when she tells me, ‘You’ve become a lot more mature now,’ I feel like I want to become even more mature. Moreover, I think to myself that I want to become a much better human being than I am now," he said.

Jong-suk and IU confirmed their relationship in December of last year.

Following the confirmation of their relationship, the couple penned a letter for their fans.

"We first met when I was around my mid-20s, and it was big beyond puppy love, but I had regrets as it couldn’t be achieved. We were friends for a long time, and now it turned out like this," Jong-suk wrote in his letter in December.

The actor further said that IU has always been his friend who can he rely on prior to their romantic relationship.

"She is an amazing person who helps me with my path and concerns of life as a friend, is someone I can rely on, is younger but sometimes feels older, and is like a grown adult but also someone I want to protect. Now she makes me want to be a better person," he stated.

In a letter to her fans, IU described Jong-suk as a person who has been reliable and supportive of her.

IU said that they "will date quietly and beautifully to not worry my fans."

Jong-suk and IU first met on the music program Inkigayo ten years ago.

Jong-suk is known for his roles in several hit series like School 2013, Doctor Stranger, Pinocchio, W, While You Were Sleeping, Romance Is a Bonus Book, and Big Mouth.

Meanwhile, IU is an actress and singer dubbed as Korea's "little sister." Among her songs include "Good Day," "Hold My Hand," "Eight," and "Love Poem," among others. As an actress, she headlined the Korean series Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo and Hotel de Luna, among others
