Miss Universe 1969 Gloria Diaz believes that luck has a lot to do with winning the Miss Universe crown.

As someone who has experience judging beauty pageants, Gloria said that her standards are very flexible. The 72-year-old beauty queen-actress shared her thoughts in an intimate interview session with select members of the press that was organized by PLDT Home on Friday, November 17 at the New World Hotel Makati.

“I don’t think beauty is the only thing, di ba, in a beauty contest. 100%, I believe, luck. I believe that hindi porke’t maganda ka, mananalo ka,” she said as she went on to look back on her own experience joining Miss Universe.

“Definitely… hindi naman ako ang pinakamaganda doon, di ba? Nagkataon lang na siguro, 1 or 2 judges preferred me than the other girls. So, that’s pure luck,” she shared.

Gloria also revealed that her favorite Filipina beauty queen is Miss International 1979 Melanie Marquez, who is also the mother of the country’s current representative to the Miss Universe – Michelle Marquez Dee.

“Sa akin, ang pinakamaganda pa rin in all the history of beauty contests is ‘yung mommy ni Michelle Dee. She, to me, was one of the most beautiful Filipinas when at her peak. And of course, things have changed like you and I and everyone else. Michelle Dee, compared, sabi ko kay [Melanie] her mama, she is an 8 to me. But an 8 can also be a winner just in case the others were 7, 6, 5. I’m not saying na hindi siya mananalo. She has a 50-50 chance.

“But take into consideration, I am the worst forecaster… So hopefully Michelle will prove me again wrong kasi type ko siya pero syempre naalala ko si Melanie,” she added.

As Michelle is currently in El Salvador to compete in the Miss Universe 2023 coronation night on November 19 (PH time), Gloria was asked about her fearless forecast for her to which she said, “Top 5.”

“Because another thing, I told you, Miss Universe now is very commercial. Wherever the pageant sells the most, the people go the craziest. Somehow, for some very interesting reasons, come up among the top 5, top 7, top 10.”

When asked about what she thinks Michelle’s advantage would be to win, Gloria answered, “Well, because she’s making waves; she’s the daughter of a past beauty queen.”

“I suppose if my daughter Isabelle [Daza] came in as a ‘Miss Something’, the first thing they will tell, talk about her is she was the daughter of [a] former Miss Universe. But that’s have a negative and a positive [side]. Some people would say, ‘Just because ganyan, dapat manalo?’ The others would say, ‘Dapat manalo ‘yan.’ So you cannot really please everyone. I mean that is an advantage for Michelle. And then of course, she has carried herself very well. She’s very smart, I hear her answers. And I told you, maybe she’s lucky,” she said.
