Reply 1988 stars Ryu Jun-yeol and Hyeri have separated after six years of being in a relationship.

Jun-yeol’s agency C-JeS Studios and Hyeri’s agency Creative Group ING confirmed the news.

"It is true that they broke up," the agencies said in a statement as reported by Naver and translated by Soompi.

It was in 2017 when the two South Korean stars went public about their relationship.

C-Jes Studios released a statement that year saying: "Ryu Jun Yeol and Hyeri recently progressed from being friends to a couple, and they are still in the early stages of their relationship."

Jun-yeol and Hyeri starred in Reply 1988 from 2015 to 2016. The series became the fifth-highest-rated drama in Korean cable television history and the highest-rated television drama at the time of airing.

In the drama series, Jun-yeol portrays the character of Kim Jung-hwan. He has a stoic and sarcastic personality and takes on a leadership role in the neighborhood group. Despite his tough exterior, Jung-hwan secretly has a crush on someone. In the beginning, he develops feelings for a friend in the neighborhood but fails to confess his love, letting the opportune moment slip away.

Meanwhile, Hye-ri portrays Sung Deok-sun, the only girl among her five neighborhood friends which includes Jung-hwan. She holds the 999th rank in school, lacking academic prowess. She radiates with a vibrant and compassionate personality.

In an interview back in 2016, Hyeri shared how Jun-yeol had been helpful when she was preparing to film an emotional scene in Reply 1988.

"I was worried if the viewers would be as sad as I would be during the crying scene, so I was wondering if I could get any tips or know-hows. So I called Ryu Jun-yeol two days before the shoot," Hyeri shared in an interview with Happy Together 3 in 2016.

"We weren’t that close back then so I had to pick up the courage to call him I asked if he could come out to the office and he came gladly without hesitation. He taught me the best," she added.
