The family of Cherie Gil shared details about her last few months following her diagnosis — including the cause of her death — two days after she passed away.

Cherie’s brother Michael de Mesa, in an Instagram post, opened up for the first time what Cherie had gone through as the Eigenmanns expressed their gratitude to everyone who reached out to them.

“Our family would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to all those who expressed their concern for Cherie during this difficult time,” he began.

He went to share that Cherie was diagnosed with a “rare form of endometrial cancer” last October and bravely battled against it. The veteran actress previously revealed her plans to reunite with her children.

“It is with heartfelt sorrow that we announce that Cherie passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 5th, at 4:48 a.m. EST after a brave battle against cancer,” he shared. ⁣

“Cherie was diagnosed with a rare form of endometrial cancer in October of last year after deciding to relocate to New York City to be closer to her children,” he added.

Michael said Cherie underwent treatment in New York following her diagnosis. ”She then underwent treatment at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center of New York.” ⁣

According to Michael, it was Cherie who requested to keep her condition within the family.

“It was her request that her diagnosis be kept private, and as a family we supported her in this decision. Cherie fought bravely against her illness, with grace and strength,” he said.

“Despite her struggles she always managed to exude courage and never lost her trademark sass, wit, and infectious humor, or her larger-than-life personality. She spent her last days surrounded by family and loved ones,” he added.

Meanwhile, Michael said he and the entire Eigenmann family feel “incredibly moved” despite mourning her passing due to the outpour of love and support they have received from the public.

“While we are deeply saddened by our loss and still mourning her passing, we are incredibly moved by the outpouring of love and support for her and our family; evidence of just how many lives Cherie touched,” he said.

⁣”In the end, there are no words – only love. Cherie lived with all her heart,” he ended his post.

Cherie Gil passed away last Friday, August 5.
